Preliminary Task- Magazine analysis

The rule of thirds for this magazine has been used so the reader instantly sets his eyes onto the logo. The tip of the eye is just on the third and therefore once the reader see’s the logo they will look to the person on the front and work their way around the magazine. The layout for this magazine is a Z. The eyes will scatted from the left side of the page horizontally and then diagonal across the page then horizontal again.

The rule of third for this magazine is different to the one in the first magazine. In this magazine all the attention will be towards the woman on the front cover. The background colours and text have been used so the person on the front stands out more. The layout is used so the reader looks at the masthead from left to right. Then they will go to the woman’s head and down her body. This will create a layout associated to the letter T.

This magazines layout has been used to the attention of the readers eyes are on both the text and the people. The main layout for this magazine is to start from the face of the person and then go along the magazine in a curvy way. The letter for this is a C. It shows all the text and also the main image on the magazine.

For the preliminary task we have to create a magazine cover for a 6^th form or college. I had to think about different elements to make my magazine cover interesting towards the targeted audience.

The main thing that had to be included was to have a mid shot of a student from the 6^th form or college. The picture must be created on Photoshop to make sure it can be as professional as possible. The different options you get in Photoshop will allow you to maximise the potential for the cover.

My main idea for the magazine cover is to make the audience aware of the magazine and make sure they know that they are the intended audience. I hope that this project will allow me to get an understanding of how to target specific audiences and make a more effective magazine cover.

My target audience is going to be students from year 7 up to year 13. There is no specific year group that I intend to target as the magazine cover is aimed at all these year groups. You will know that the magazine is aimed at students because there is a student on the front cover. Also the body language with the finger pointing at the audience will make them feel they are the ones being targeted. I felt that I wanted to target all the year groups so I can get a wider audience rather than having a smaller audience.

My idea is to make it into a bit of a funny yet slightly serious magazine. I used the same sort of picture as to the famous image from the world war of, “we need you”. I hoped that this would be a funny kind of gimmicky image due to the person with a smile on his face. However the colours also will get the audience to see the funky side of the magazine due to the colours being bright and giving a happy feeling towards the audience.

The main purpose of the magazine is to inform the audience about the cultural fusion show. I have the finger pointing at the audience, which shows that they should share their talent at the shows audition.

If it was a real magazine I think the magazine would be published every month. As it is a school magazine I feel that there would not be enough news to be sent out to the students and having an issue per month you can put a wider range of news and stories inside.

Students would want to read it as they want to possibly know more about the magazine. If someone was to be pointing at you, you would like to know more about why they are pointing. So that is why it should interest them into reading the magazine.

I will use different image effects that I feel would work best in order to maximise the full creative potential. It has to make sure it appeals to the young audience and persuade them to read the magazine.
